About the organization
In the late 1980's, a group of ministers and lay leaders involved with South Bronx Churches (a collective of Protestant, Muslim and Catholic congregations) began discussions about the renovation of several abandoned buildings around their congregations in the Morrisania section of the Bronx.
BEULAH was incorporated in 1992 AS A SEPARATE ENTITY, for the specific purpose of renovating buildings. The New York City Department of Housing and Preservation’s (HPD) Vacant Buildings Program awarded us four vacant buildings (in the Morrisania section of the Bronx). Construction was completed and residents began moving in by the spring of 1993. The project was completed ahead of schedule and, as a result, HPD awarded BEULAH three other buildings to renovate in the Morris Heights section in 1994. These two projects together totaled 138 apartments in the 7 buildings that BEULAH renovated and occupied.
This building initiative is named Beulah, “which means married in Hebrew and is taken from the scripture”, Isaiah 62:4 -- “Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken: neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzi-bah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.” This scripture describes a vision where people are reunited with the land that was once desolate. The buildings are in excellent condition and the residents have organized themselves in a unique way to take social action in their buildings and in the South Bronx community.
Because of the devastation that had befallen the urban community, Beulah was created to take an active part in the physical and social renewal of the South Bronx. Since our inception in 1992, Beulah has created and provided over 500 quality affordable housing units. Our aim is to challenge the social imbalances that affect our public lives by a participatory system of diversity and inclusion.
To develop leaders who can build public relationships with their community while strategically enhancing their lives through public action.
Due to the devastation of the urban community, Beulah was created to take an active role in the physical and social renewal of the South Bronx.
The power resulting from shared experiences creates collective & diverse leadership as a key component. No one person possesses all of the answers.
The center provides community development through technology & leadership training. This is a passion project born out of a resident committee called the Beulah Strategy Team.
